2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from the CEO
& Board Chair

In a year like no other, Washington students, families, and communities had to confront sustained challenges stemming from a once-in-a-century global pandemic while in the throes of a racial justice reckoning. These events, and their disproportionate impact on the communities we center in our work, made it clear that we needed to press on.

“Equitable access to STEM education is key to the continued growth and success of our state. Washington STEM’s work is critical to creating solutions and statewide partnerships to advance educational equity, especially for students historically underrepresented in STEM fields.“

STORIES
OF CHANGE
Washington STEM partnered with the Commission on Hispanic Affairs to develop a new approach to STEM career pathways in Washington through the development of Career Connect Tech Academies.
Over the past three years, Washington STEM and LASER have partnered to create a strategic approach to improving science education, building the internal capacity and skill to better center equity in science and STEM education.
Washington state's child care and early education systems were already in crisis before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. What can be done to bolster and reimagine early learning to provide the high-quality care and positive learning interactions children need?
Systemic rascism and injustice reached a tipping point in the Summer of 2020. Washington STEM CEO, Angela Jones, J.D., shared her thoughts and reflections on the path forward to justice and equity at Washington STEM.

“We knew that for the Career Connect Tech Academy model to work, we would have to partner with an organization that sits at the intersection of industry and education, and that’s Washington STEM.”

Brian
Moreno

Commissioner, Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs
