Meet Olivia

What are your plans after high school?

After high school, I plan to attend Florida Atlantic University to play beach volleyball and major in computer science. I’m hoping to use computer science and apply it to biology in my career.

What advice would you give your 5-year-old self?

I would tell my 5-year-old self to enjoy what she does and look for opportunities to expand on what she loves, without being afraid to say no to things. Also, prioritizing meaningful relationships and remembering why you’re doing what you’re doing is so important.

Nominated by her teacher

“Olivia has been able to explore topics of inequities in the biomedical and health science spaces. She is currently working on an op-ed exploring health inequities in the Latinx community.”

“I am nominating this student due to her involvement in STEM beyond what opportunities are available to her at school. Both over the past summer and throughout the school year Olivia has been involved in an internship at the Fred Hutchinson Center for Cancer Research. Throughout this whole process she has been able to learn a wide variety of skills around coding and the roles of coding in biomedical research. She has also been able to explore topics of inequities in the biomedical and health science spaces. Olivia currently is working on an op-ed exploring health inequities in the Latinx community. Additionally, I am nominating Olivia due to her success in her science courses (STEM, Biology 101, Human Physiology 201, Biotechnology, and Systems Medicine). She not only achieves well in these classes she is often pushing the edge of her understanding and peers always seeking to understand more. She does excel in other areas of school and is an active member of the school’s volleyball team.” -Seth Manthey, teacher at Chelan High School

The Washington STEM Rising Star Awards, presented by Kaiser Permanente, encourage girls to embrace STEM education and to explore the use of STEM in ways that will support their education, career, and personal development and the development and needs of others.
