Meet Jazzmin

What are your plans after high school?

After high school, I will be attending a university and majoring in zoology. Fingers crossed I get into Washington State University. I love animals and want to do my part in the pursuit of their population growth. Whether that may be saving an animal from an injury or helping them mate, zoology is the best way to go.

What do you like best about STEM?

The best part about STEM is math. Lots of things in life revolve around math and it’s awesome to see. From measuring wood so you can build, to knowing how many Covid cases there have been and predicting how many there will be, it’s a part of our life and we need to know these things.

What advice would you give your 5-year-old self?

If I could time travel and talk to my 5-year-old self, I would tell them to relax. Our stuttering doesn’t get in the way of us doing a great job in life. Take your time, talk slow, and don’t apologize for something you can’t control.

Nominated by her teacher

“Jazzy has so many amazing things going for her: an incredibly strong work ethic, an inquisitive mind, a mature demeanor with which she helps both herself and others succeed.”

“Jazzy is a Calculus student of mine. Jazzy has so many amazing things going for her: an incredibly strong work ethic, an inquisitive mind, a mature demeanor with which she helps both herself and others succeed. As a person of color, and a daughter to a single mom, Jazzy has overcome some layers in her life that not all students have to conquer! And she has succeeded in incredible ways. She is driven to always do her best, and I admire her every day. She has a wonderful aptitude for math – to understand it and dig more deeply. She is an excellent candidate for this STEM award.” -Lindley Schmitt, teacher at the Science and Math Institute

The Washington STEM Rising Star Awards, presented by Kaiser Permanente, encourage girls to embrace STEM education and to explore the use of STEM in ways that will support their education, career, and personal development and the development and needs of others.
