In mid-May, the Washington Employment Security Department (ESD) began releasing unemployment data to better gauge the impacts of COVID-19 on Washington’s economy. To make the data actionable for our partners, Washington STEM began analyzing the information.

Using ESD unemployment figures, micro-census data, and job & wage data, Washington STEM created a new tool that provides insight into the demographics of claims and the roles and industries more or less affected by unemployment and furloughs. Through this insight, it has become clear that STEM jobs are particularly insulated from volatility during these unprecedented times.
