Irma – 2025 Southeast Region Rising Star

Her cradle-to-career journey
How has your math identity impacted your journey in STEM?
Early on, I saw math as my least favorite subject. I thought being good at math meant being fast and always correct. However, as I progressed through my sophomore year, I began engaging more with math and other subjects. I quickly realized that math is a tool for solving real world problems. This little change helped me embrace my skills, find confidence, and get to explore new opportunities in STEM.
Who is the teacher or mentor who sparked your interest in STEM?
One teacher who truly sparked my interest in STEM was Mr. Just. His passion for science and hands-on teaching made this subject feel exciting and approachable. What stood out to me the most was that he was always willing to help you one-on-one before school, lunch, and even after school. Mr. Just has always encouraged his students to engage in lessons and never be afraid to ask questions.
What are you thinking about doing after high school?
After high school, I am planning to pursue physical therapy or radiology. I am currently indecisive, but know that I want to be in the medical field. Some ways I am beginning to explore these careers are through my GEAR UP person, Mr. Young. He’s been an important mentor and took the time to understand my strengths and interests. Mr. Young has taken me and other students on field trips to job shadow a career that really sparked our interest.
Pursuing a career in medicine
Irma’s interest in STEM started with wanting to know how things work. That interest has become a full-blown passion for healthcare.
Nominated for her work ethic and compassion
“Irma has inspired me with her maturity and work ethic. Over the past year, she has explored different avenues in healthcare. She is a helper and has chosen to help people in physical need. She has attended a medical Scrubs Camp to try out avenues in physical therapy, imaging, surgical nursing, laboratory work, and phlebotomy. She has job shadowed a local physical therapist and epidemiologist. These experiences have solidified her desire to help others. That desire to help others has driven her deeper into medical science and continues to do so. Her passion to help will enable her to become a radiologist or physical therapist.
Furthermore, Irma is kind, caring, and compassionate. She likes learning. She is curious and inquisitive. She is fascinated by aspects of the human body. I have no doubt that she will succeed in whatever healthcare career she pursues.”
